Actually from Day 1 when I bring him back home, he will out of nowhere, suddenly starting screaming and yapping away while limping on his leg.
However, I didn't realise of his condition until he started to limp so frequent (80% of the day) that I decided to brought him to the vet.
Even the groomer realised that his back legs are weak and should look into it.
Then I realised, for his own good, I should send him to fix his leg.
As much as I want him to not undergo surgery ( he is only 7 months old) but I was told that since he is young, his recovery rate will be faster and also, it will worsen if I were to fix the problem at a later age.
I went to consult 2 different vets for his problem.
1. Companion Animal Surgery Singapore

Dr Miles
1st vet I went to is Companion Animal Surgery. It is quite well-known for having friendly vets and a well-furbished place even though it is relatively new in the industry. I went to see Dr Miles, who is a renowned doctor in the vet industry (from the vet clinic website).
Summary of what he said:
There is a need for surgery for both hind legs. Basically to deepen his groove by shaving the bone, require hospitalization for one day. Inclusive of all medicine, the quoted price is 1.5k - 2k SGD.
Because Pocky has not been castrated, he could also do it at the same time if I want to.
2. The Animal Clinic Katong Branch (East)

Dr Hsu
Summary of what he said:
The 2nd vet I went to is Animal Clinic. I read it from a dog blog who also went there for the same surgery. I walked-in to the Katong Branch and waited for around half an hour for the vet - Dr Hsu. The vet clinic was not as nice or big as Companion Animal surgery but after reading online reviews, I found out that many have positive reviews on Dr Hsu. When Pocky met Dr Hsu, Dr Hsu examine by touch that Pocky is a Grade 3 Luxating Patella ( Grade 1 being mild, Grade 4 is the most serious case). However, he said that Pocky's groove is actually quite good and there is no need to deepen the groove. Instead , he will do a suture so that the kneecap won't be out of place anymore. Also, he said that castration should not be done at the same time. He quoted around 700 SGD.
In the end, I decided to go for the Animal Clinic. They have 3 branch, basically just 2 locations: Clementi and Katong. Dr Hsu is around at the Katong branch on Mon and Fri and at the Clementi branch on Tues Morning. It is easier to fix an appointment with him at the Clementi branch.
Two days before the surgery, I brought Pocky to East Coast Park and play with other dogs while riding on a family bike, Hoping that he can enjoy more time outside with his surgery.
On the last day before his surgery, I bathed him and took away his water bowl (not allowed to consume water or food after 12 midnight the day before surgery). He didnt realised anything wrong and continued playing happily with his toys.
On 3rd March ( Tues ), Alvin dropped Pocky off at the clinic at around 10am. And I phoned the clinic at around 4pm, Pocky's surgery is already done.
At 7:30pm, I went to pick up Pocky and he was confined in a cage, with a cat in another cage on top of him. Upon seeing me, he scream in such agony that really shocked me :( I was heartbroken to see him in this state and also with his leg shaven to the skin that really look disturbing. When I carried him, he appeared to be half-conscious and teary :(
I brought him to the pet store next to the clinic to buy an e-collar for him. The pet store staffs saw him and say they feel bad for him too :(
When he was home, he keep screaming when he moves his body. It was very heart-wrenching.
I decided to sleep on the floor with him and the night went well :)
Hope Pocky recovers soon..
Update on 04 Nov 2016:
The stitch from the surgery heal nicely.
I went back to the clinic a few times for review and Dr Hsu is kind enough to not charge me at all.
Pocky has recovered very well and though his other leg required surgery, we decided to put it on hold since he is recovery so well now.
I'm glad I took immediate attention to his limping leg, where he doesn't have to suffer in pain anymore :)
Please may i know if the suture helped with the luxating patella
ReplyDeleteHello! Yes, definitely! Now, he is pain-free and running happily around with no more limping anymore! His other leg is supposed to be due for another surgery but since he is doing great now, I decided to put it on hold until necessary :)
